Nestled in the lap of Nagaland, Dzukou Valley offers a trekker’s paradise. Its name captures the essence of this place, with “Dzukou” translating to “cold water” in the Angami dialect, a reference to the refreshing stream that flows through the valley and freezes during winter. Alternatively, the Mao Naga word “dzÜkou” translates to “dreamlike,” hinting at the valley’s ethereal beauty.
The Dzukou Valley trek is a moderate one, ranging from 5 to 6 hours and stretching roughly 9 kilometres. While some sections involve steeper climbs, the overall experience is rewarding. The trail takes you through lush green forests teeming with subtropical evergreen trees and silver ferns. As you ascend, you’ll encounter two conveniently located rest camps, perfect for catching your breath and soaking in the sights.
The highlight of the Dzukou Valley trek is undoubtedly the valley itself. Upon reaching the plateau, you’ll be greeted by a mesmerizing expanse of rolling green hills, reminiscent of a meticulously mown lawn. This verdant landscape explodes with vibrant colours during the monsoon season, transforming into a breathtaking tapestry of wildflowers. Imagine trekking amidst lilies, orchids, rhododendrons, and countless other endemic species, all vying for attention.
